Clients: Selected Work
KANSAS CITY MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION
The Sprint Center Arena is a new state-of-the-art sports and entertainment facility in downtown Kansas City. The Sprint Center is part of a larger redevelopment effort to transform the eastern edge of downtown into a dynamic entertainment district. Upon selection of the final architectural design in 2005, created by the Downtown Arena Design Team (a collaboration of architectural firms 360 Architecture, Ellerbe Becket and HOK Sport), Via Partnership was contacted to work with the Kansas City Municipal Arts Commission to facilitate the selection of an artist to create a site-specific work for the Sprint Center. Via managed an open call to artists and guided the jury process for this $1.3 million public art project.
In the fall of 2007, the selected artist, Chris Doyle, installed his project The Moons. The Moons consists of three, 10-foot circular LED screens suspended over a series of gardens in the plaza along Grand Avenue. The videos depict over 600 people from Kansas City flying across the screens. They run 24 hours per day and change with the seasons. The project was selected because of its witty references to overall architectural form and its innovative approach to fountain design relevant in the “City of Fountains.”
