ARTS IN TRANSIT, METRO
Prior to founding Via, Blumenfeld and McKinley worked at Arts in Transit, a community partnership program of the Metro in St. Louis. At Arts in Transit they managed artist involvement on civic design projects for both the MetroLink and the MetroBus system (e.g. Commuter Rail, St. Clair County Light Rail, and Cross County alignments); administered the site-specific public art program, including Calls for Entry, artist selection, contracting, installation, maintenance, and removal; and cultivated numerous collaborative projects throughout the community including developing the community art bus program, station area banners, and a poetry poster program. They were also involved in three Transit-Oriented Development projects at the Forest Park, Wellston and Delmar MetroLink stations and wrote multiple successful arts and enhancement grant applications to fund these projects and programs.
Via has continued to work with Arts in Transit as consultants since leaving Metro as employees in 1999. In 2002, Via updated Art in Transit’s Policies and Procedures which Blumenfeld had written in 1999. Via managed the commission of a new work of art at the St. Louis County Parking Garage in Clayton the selection of seven artists for the new Cross County MetroLink Extension, with a total public art budget of $980,000. Artists selected include Ellen Driscoll, Brower Hatcher, Erwin Redl, Andrew Ginzel and Kristen Jones, Janet Zweig, Lindsey Stouffer and Douglas Hollis.
